General meetings are held about once a month on Wednesdays in room 201 at 8 a.m.  All members are notified in advance of the exact dates.  Activities include preparation and tasting of typical foods, videos, games, listening to Hispanic music, seeing typical dances, and participation in an annual fund-raiser.

Continuing project - In 1998 the Spanish Club decided to help support an underprivileged child in Chile, South America through the organization Children International.  Our little boy is named Mateus Noe Espinoza Silva and he is now 10 years old.  With money earned from our annual fall candy sale we are helping to provide medical, dental, and educational assistance to Mateus.  We receive letters and photos of Mateus twice a year.  The club members also write letters in Spanish to him.  We hope to continue this worthwhile project for many years.

Membership is open to all students with an interest in Spanish.

At the November 28 meeting, the Spanish Club had a special guest speaker.  Amy Travis, M.H.S. class of 2000, spoke about her Rutgers service project in the Dominican Republic.  In March, Amy and other Rutgers students went to live and work with members of an impoverished Dominican community.

The photo above shows Amy and one of the Dominican girls.  The photo below shows Amy and a Dominican family in front of their house.

Amy explained the extreme poverty that exists and asked for support from the Spanish Club for her second trip in January.  Her group will be working in a local school and hopes to build a house for one family.  A list of items needed can be obtained from Mrs. Dirmeitis.  Bring items to room 201 before December 12.

Amy will come back in the spring to speak and show photos of her second trip.
