Enjoyed your site very much, Jonathan. I'm sure Mr. Burrows would as well--especially the quotes. I took his classes from 1977 - 1980 and went to Europe with him in 1979. That trip was easily the highlight of my life at East. We spent three weeks in Cambridge, toured northern England and Scotland, crossed the channel by ferry to Calais, spent a few days in Paris, took a train to Salzburg and stayed in the most beautiful town in the world--Kuchl, Austria. From there we trained to Florence for a day, and then south to Rome. Mr. Burrows was of course, a phenomenal guide. He seemed to be in his element in Britain, as though he was metaphysically transported back to recreate it for us--as he often did in class. He was every bit the English gentleman.

I wasn't his best student. I loved the history section but had trouble with the poetry. He actually caught me napping once and clapped his hands loudly, yelling "Jon!" to wake me up [probably reading Chaucer]. No matter. Every fellow Burrows student I've run into since high school recalls him with adulation, as I do. I think he touched us all deeply.

Incidently, one of the news articles on your website is by my mother, Anne Crooks (remarried). Two of her sons, George and myself, took Mr. Burrows' classes and went to Europe.
